Client’s Living Room Goals
This coastal inspired living room e-design was super special! The client was in the middle of a kitchen renovation, including new layout, cabinets, lighting, etc. She came to me to help her achieve a cohesive look for her living room space. Her living room is adjacent to her kitchen, therefore, it was important that the rooms flow considering the new kitchen decor. As you can imagine, budgets get tight when you are in the middle of a large renovation. So, for this project, e-design made perfect sense so that items could be purchased over time.
Achieving a Coastal Style
When the client described her style she shared that she loves coastal touches and prefers a classic traditional look. Her kitchen island was going to be painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy, just like a previous client. So, I knew that there would be a lot of blue hues used to tie the new kitchen into the living room design. The perfect starting point for the this room was this gorgeous rug from the Chris Loves Julia collection by Loloi. The rug has pretty blues and warm neutral tones throughout, and it has that beautiful vintage feel. To keep the light and airy look, the Big Sur sectional was the perfect choice for this space. It was important for the client to have a comfy place to rest their feet, so using an ottoman made sense. Some blue, tan & gray throw pillows help to tie everything together.
Even though comfort was a priority, it was important to ground the space with a structural element. So, this West Elm ottoman in a blue chambray color with antique bronze legs was a great fit. Over the sofa, a large scale art piece was the way to go to help match the scale of this area, and Juniper Print Shop was the perfect source for style and affordability.
Mixing Texture
To give some contrast to the light upholstery, I chose black metal end tables . This really helps to tie in the ottoman legs, too. The glass tabletop on each of these end tables keeps everything light. And, a square and round shape add interest while keeping the look cohesive. Lighting was another priority for this space and these natural stone looking lamps are some of the most affordable I’ve seen. The accent chairs have a subtle gray stripe and light wood accents, all of which tie into the client’s kitchen area. Adding greenery to any room brings an element of style, and here, an olive tree on the other side of the sofa is the perfect touch.
A light wood console for the TV also unifies the kitchen and living room spaces and the stylish design of this cabinet helps keep the space modern. Also, a bench with a similar wood tone provides more seating. By adding artwork above, it balances out the scale on the wall opposite the sofa.
Fireplace Update
The client’s fireplace area was in a red brick. To help unify the kitchen space and to better coordinate with the new furnishings, a white painted brick was recommended. Lighting in the kitchen will be some beautiful gold pendants, so the foundation of the mantle decor is a gold mirror in a modern shape. Layering in some black candlesticks and a black graphic framed botanical artwork piece really ties everything together. I always recommend adding in textures, and here a woven bowl adds more interest to the mantle space.
Lovely Textures, Colors & Coastal Feel
Overall, I am so happy with this coastal inspired living room e-design project. I can’t wait to see the finished look once the client’s beautiful kitchen is complete! Unifying spaces with color, pattern and texture is one of my favorite parts of design. This project really stretched me to achieve a great blend for the client and in the end, the finished product was a success!
