Goals for the Space

When this client reached out, she really wanted to make sure and capture a light and bright coastal feel for her new home. They had purchased a home in a beautiful area near the southeastern NC coast. As you can imagine, the client was so excited to start making it their own. The dining room was an important piece as it was one of the first things you see when you walk in the house. Creating a neutral coastal dining room design that fit with the other parts of the home would help tie the main living area together. The room was “mostly” a square shape, with a chandelier in the center. So, it made perfect sense to use a round table. Additionally, some storage pieces were requested.

 

Layout of the Space

This space had a couple of different components that made it a little tricky to figure out how to layer in decor and styling pieces. Additionally, in order to fit at least six people at the table, it needed to be somewhat larger (60″ or more). This created a tighter space to be able to be able to fit storage furniture along with the table. The windows were oddly placed in one corner of the room. So, some work needed to be done on the front end to plan out how the components of the room would best fit in the space. When you have off centered windows, you really need to create an illusion of balance with other pieces, like pictures or taller furniture.

After several iterations, this is where the layout ended up. The taller cabinet really helps to balance out the off-center windows. Also, it provides additional storage that is always welcomed. Cabinets or shelves also offer a great way to display pretty china or other decor to make a dining space feel more interesting.

How to Achieve theNeutral Coastal Dining Room Look

The selections for this space help to evoke that laid back coastal feel, while creating a level of sophistication. The rattan and rope details really help to capture a coastal vibe. While the black accent pieces create a more formal feel that is appropriate for a stand-alone dining room. The white millwork is a great backdrop for all the texture and warmth that will go into this space. Using a soft neutral paint, like Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams above the molding enhances the serene feeling for the room.

The furniture pieces include a highly reviewed yet affordable round table that has a beautiful wood tone. The black accent cabinet is another affordable find with a pretty wood inset that balances out the darkness of the piece. The artwork includes some muted vintage coastal pieces paired with some graphic black and white botanicals. A mix of gold, black and natural frames helps to keep this space interesting.

The client has a light that she is planning to use a light that is similar to this chandelier. I love how the drum shape plays off the round table. This particular one has a great gold accent that really warms up the space. Adding linen curtain panels to the windows will also help keep the light bright and soft in this room. Along with the curtains, using bamboo shades versus the blinds really gives the space more texture.
