The Summer Catch Project: A Timeless Coastal Retreat Designed for Living
Some homes are designed to impress. Others are designed to be returned to, season after season, year after year.

The Summer Catch project was always meant to be the latter. From the beginning, this home was envisioned as a long-term family retreat: warm, welcoming, and timeless in the truest sense. A place where memories could unfold naturally, without feeling precious or overly designed.

Set along Ocean Isle Beach, the home sits beside preserved land that serves as a coastal walking trail through beautiful marshlands, with sweeping, uninterrupted views – a rare setting that immediately shaped our approach. In this case, the goal was never to compete with the landscape, but to complement it with a home that felt grounded, calm, and quietly confident.

The Vision for Summer Catch
Our clients, college sweethearts now based in Charlotte, had spent years searching for the right coastal location to build a home their family could return to again and again. While they explored several destinations along the coast, Ocean Isle Beach ultimately captured their hearts for its understated charm and sense of permanence.
They weren’t looking for a trend-driven beach house. They wanted a home that would feel just as right twenty years from now as it does today, one that balanced refinement with ease and beauty with livability. That clarity of vision guided every decision that followed.

Designing for a Feeling, Not a Trend
At Cass Design Co., we believe the most successful homes begin with emotion. Before finishes, furnishings, or fixtures are selected, we ask how a space should feel.
For Summer Catch, the intention was to evoke a sense of nostalgic coastal living with subtle references to classic Carolina summers, layered with thoughtful details that elevate the everyday experience. The design needed to feel familiar, but never predictable. Polished, yet relaxed. Refined, without feeling formal.
This approach allowed the home to feel collected and enduring from the start, rather than overly styled or fussy.

Architectural Intention as the Foundation
Timeless coastal design is built on architectural clarity. Proportion, flow, and detailing create the framework that allows a home to age gracefully over time.
In the Summer Catch project, many of the most impactful decisions were made early, well before finishes entered the conversation. Thoughtful millwork, cabinetry details, and intentional transitions between spaces gave the home a sense of depth and permanence that can’t be achieved through decor alone.
These behind-the-scenes choices are often what separate a house that looks finished from one that truly feels custom.

A Home Designed for Real Life
While Summer Catch is visually refined, it was designed first and foremost for living. The layout supports family routines just as seamlessly as it accommodates hosting friends and extended family. Spaces flow easily, storage is integrated thoughtfully, and materials were selected to balance beauty with durability.
This is a home meant to be enjoyed—on quiet weekday mornings, busy summer weekends, and everything in between.

A Collaborative, Trust-Led Process
Projects like Summer Catch thrive when clients value expert guidance as much as aesthetics. Our clients trusted us to lead not only the visual direction of the home, but also the planning decisions that protect long-term value and livability.
That trust in our process allowed us to design with intention and confidence—anticipating needs, refining details, and creating a home that feels both personal and enduring.
