Coastal Modern Boys Bedroom Design
Planning for a coastal modern boys bedroom update. In this room, the aim is to give a special guy a space where he and his buddies can hang out. It will jive with the rest of the house but will also represent the things he loves.
Blending Old & New
I get asked all the time about using existing furnishings in client designs. This is the perfect example of utilizing existing pieces. In this example, the boy’s bed is fairly new and will work in the design. The dresser is a thrift find, but it has a look similar to this white campaign style dresser. This bedroom has a fan and light combo that works well into the design. But as far as the other pieces, this is where we are switching some things up to make this room feel more grown up, and still stay within the design style of the rest of the home.
Goals
Right now, this room is painted Benjamin Moore Van Courtland Blue on all of the walls. It’s a pretty color, but I would like for the room to have a more airy feel that embodies a coastal modern look. To help create the brighter space, a board and batten accent wall would be a nice add. Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore is the perfect white for an accent wall. Also planned, is to add bamboo shades to further the coastal vibe.
Switching up the artwork in here is where we can make the space feel more personal for this little guy. Right now, he really doesn’t have much artwork, and I am super excited about the pieces planned for his room. My boy loves basketball, and I just love this beach basketball print for above the bed. Over the dresser, the plan is to use a series of three coordinating coastal black and white prints in a large scale size. On the wall opposite the dresser, I feel that a “Pray For Surf” piece will be perfect. This will add a little color, while keeping with the palette of the room. These touches will really create a coastal modern boys bedroom feel.
I love ordering downloadable prints online. My favorite place to print is Mpix.com. To add affordable custom frames, I love using an online framing company like FrameItEasy to complete. This is the best way I have found to get large scale artwork that looks custom, but is way more affordable.
Coordinating Accents that Create Coastal Modern Bedroom Space
When putting together bedrooms, one way to make a room feel like it has more of a designer touch is to have furniture pieces that are coordinated but not a matching set. With the wood bed and the white dresser, the plan is to use some navy nightstands. These have an awesome bamboo shape and are available at a good price. I love the dark contrast against the white wall. Using blue stripe bedding helps to tie in the blue from the nightstands. With the blue on the walls, nightstands and bedding, I wanted to warm the space up a bit, and this modern tan rug with a geometric design was the perfect solution.
Every boy deserves a cozy place to hang out, so this cognac colored leather plush seat is great for a growing little man’s space. Using some pillows on the bed that coordinate with the chair helps to tie this piece into the room. These pillows also keep the space feeling more man than boy. Adding some modern shaped lamps also helps to create a space that feels more grown up for a growing little man.

Advantages of Creating a Plan
Even though I know it will take some time to complete this design for my boy’s modern coastal bedroom, it was so helpful to get the plan in front of me. This allows for seeing how everything will coordinate. I can plan to order things here and there as budget allows. Hopefully, he will soon have a space that feels cool enough for his friends to hang out in, and still coordinated with our home.
