How To Create a Bedroom with Modern Coastal Classic Style

Coastal style can be interpreted in many ways. By focusing on a few design principles, you can create a modern coastal feel without it feeling overdone. To achieve the desired look for our upcoming guest bedroom refresh, I used some of these ideas. Here are three key components to use for a modern casual coastal vibe.

  1. Incorporate woven textures. Coastal style rooms often include natural materials. When you use these materials, it helps to create a light and airy feel. This makes sense as it is often quite warm in coastal areas. And even when it’s not, these materials can create a sense of warmth in a space. Materials like rattan, jute, cane, wicker, etc. are some that are commonly used. For modern coastal style, you only need a couple pieces in a room. Adding too many pieces can possibly create a look that is too match-y and overdone.
  2. Keep the color palette light. More specifically, choose accent colors that mimic nature as it is seen near the coast. These colors include tans, beiges, grays, blues, aquas, etc. Colors in this palette create a calm and serene vibe that is reminiscent of life at the beach.
  3. Use a lot of white. Pops of white help to create a bright look as if light is reflecting off the water. White can be seen on furniture, walls, linens and even lighting in modern coastal design.

For this guest bedroom, here’s the design plan to update the existing look.

As you can see, the space is on the smaller side. We have some water damage from an A/C issue. Therefore, paint is needed in this space. This repair gives a good opportunity for an overall refresh. Honestly from when we moved in, I have never really pulled this space together fully. So, I am excited to finally be doing just that!

For room refreshes like these, I like to draw up a design plan to create a cohesive look. This process yields better results as you can visualize everything you purchase before you go out and buy something you regret.

In this space, we currently have some furniture pieces that are in good condition. Because the bed felt outdated, I opted to replace it. The nightstands, however, had a shape that worked in the new design. So, the plan is to give them a refresh and use them. Everything else is getting replaced. This design reminds me of a page from a Serena & Lily catalogue, timeless and coastal. While pulling together this design, I rounded up some of my favorite key pieces for a coastal bedroom.

Modern Coastal Style Beds

For our guest bedroom design, I chose to do a cane style headboard in a natural wood color. If you love the look of cane, there are many options at several price points . Because this space is a guest bedroom, not our primary bedroom, I wanted an affordable option. I chose one from the new line from Hearth & Home at Target. I have some of the other cane products from this line at Target and I have been happy with them. So, I am confident that this bed will also be a hit. Cane beds are a great way to incorporate natural textures in a bedroom space. Here are some of my favorite cane style beds.

Favorite White Nightstands

With a wood tone bed, a white nightstand is the perfect contrast for a coastal style bedroom. There are some great affordable options for white nightstands out there, too. Or, if you are like me and like the shape of some existing nightstands you own, painting is always an option as well. Below are some great affordable white nightstands that work well with cane beds.

Coastal inpsired bedding

You can never go wrong with a fluffy white duvet for a coastal style bedroom. However, for this space, I wanted to use more pattern, as most of my other bedrooms have all white bedding. I decided on a unique tan buffalo plaid. To me, it has a Serena & Lily vibe that is so pretty and timeless.

Stripes are another pattern that work well in coastal bedroom design. Of course, you will want to use that coastal color palette. Here are some pattern bedding sets that work well to achieve this look.

Neutral Vintage Style rugs That Work For Coastal Style

It is no secret that rugs help define a room. For bedrooms, they make for a soft underfoot if you have wood or other hard material flooring. Neutral colors always work well in coastal design. I love a vintage look for rugs. They help to create a timeless feel. Here are some of my favorite vintage looking neutral rugs.

I am excited to bring this space together! Of course check back here and on social media for updates on this space.
